Stupid Stupid People!
Okay...when people die...I have sympathy. I honestly do. And I'm sorry that the example I'm about to use involves a 13 year old child. I just wish that people retelling the stories weren't so...stupid!
So, for those of you who don't know, a few days ago a 13 year old boy in Calgary sustained head injuries when a rock flew up from under a bus wheel and struck him in the head. The first time I heard of it, they said it was a "freak accident", and I was like "That IS a freak accident..."
But I was misinformed.
Today as I perused the CFCN website for weather information, I can across the story again, informing the public that the boy had died of his injuries today. And I decided to read further into the article, which proclaimed that he had died of a "freak accident." Now, my theory on a freak accident is something that you don't have ANY control over. My uncle getting struck by lightning=freak accident. A freak accident is something that could not have been prevented. But this boy and his friend were playing in a bus trap and decided to put a rock on it to see what would happen, and then a bus came and the rock flew up and hit the one boy. I'm sorry, but that is not a "freak accident". It was completely preventable, had those boys not been where they were not supposed to be, doing things they were not supposed to do. A tragedy, to be sure, and I have sympathy for the family. But it's not a freak accident, it's a valuable lesson in DON'T PLAY IN BUS TRAPS AND DO STUPID STUFF THAT COULD GET YOU KILLED!
Sorry...for me, this very much relates to the guy whose brother died when he fell off the platform and was struck by a train. The guy petitioned to have guard rails put up and claimed it was a freak accident, and only guard rails could have saved his brother. You know what else would have saved him? YOU TWO NOT GOOFING AROUND ON THE PLATFORM AND STANDING IN FRONT OF THE BRIGHT YELLOW LINE THAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO STAY BEHIND!
Sorry...just sometimes...the world's stupidity hurts me.
